⠀⠀⠀THE PORT MAFIA⠀ ⠀⠀ is the largest unit of organized crime within yokohama. with hundreds of members, there are five executives with an immense amount of strength and power as well as the port mafia boss. there are many ability users within the port mafia, most of which stand within high ranking.

⠀⠀⠀THE SPECIAL OPERATIONS DIVISION⠀ ⠀⠀ is a secret government branch that is in charge of maintaining national security and regulating gifted individuals + organizations.

the latter three orgs are international organizations.

⠀⠀⠀THE GUILD⠀ ⠀⠀being an american group,
⠀⠀⠀THE ORDER OF THE CLOCK TOWER⠀ ⠀⠀being european, and
⠀⠀⠀THE DECAY OF ANGELS⠀ ⠀⠀ being a mixed bag.

bungou stray dogs follows atsushi nakajima, an orphan who has been kicked out of his orphanage as a result of a man-eating tiger. ⠀spoiler alert for the first episode:⠀ atsushi is this very tiger. ⠀he learns he has a special ability that allows him to transform into a tiger and is invited by dazai osamu and his partner kunikida doppo to join the armed detective agency. conflict brews between the ada and a criminal organization: the port mafia. from there, yokohama descends into chaos as an american organization known as the guild touches down in an effort to kidnap atsushi, who is the supposed key to finding a fabled book capable of making anything written in it real.

in the world of bungou stay dogs (bsd), there are people known as ⠀ability users, ⠀who are people with powers. some of these powers are offensive, others defensive, and some in between.

other than that, the world is largely the same as our own.

note: the "bungou" in bungou stray dogs translates to "literary". one of the key features of bsd is that all of the characters share names with famous classic authors and many of them take inspiration from those authors in small ways. ⠀no, the characters are not literally the authors, ⠀it's not a world where all of the authors are thrown into a universe with powers.

the general format for ability users is that their ability would be the name of that real author's work. for example, yosano akiko's ability is called⠀ "thou shalt not die", ⠀which is the title of an actual written poem by the real yosano akiko in 1904. we can see this pattern following other ability users in bsd.⠀ ( this is a neat lil idea should you want to create a verse for your muse ! )

although yosano is somewhat of a minor character in the series, she does have a set of dynamics i consider relevant and important to her development - these connections may be referenced in threads or various headcanon / study posts.

⠀MORI OGAI⠀ ⠀⠀her former father figure ( loosely used ), he exploited yosano when she was eleven years old during ⠀+ the great war. ⠀she worked with him as his assistant and a student surgeon during the great war, where her ability was exploited and caused her great trauma.

⠀RANPO EDOGAWA⠀ ⠀⠀yosano's closest friend. he recruited her into the newly founded ada ( three years after the great war ), where yosano became the second official member. she trusts him dearly and she would not be where she currently is without him. it is because of him that she holds more belief in herself, finding the light in the world instead of drowning in her guilt. they work together frequently and she spends the most time with him.

⠀KUNIKIDA DOPPO⠀ ⠀⠀the third person to join the ada ( presumably ), yosano grew closer to him as they worked together over the years. he, like ranpo, is considered her close friend, though they carry a more professional relationship at the workplace.

⠀FUKUZAWA YUKICHI⠀ ⠀⠀it is because of fukuzawa that yosano was able to safely depart from mori's hold and the port mafia. he is the president of the ada, and she holds great respect for him.

⠀JUNICHIRO TANIZAKI⠀ ⠀⠀one of the younger members of the ada, yosano finds him in her operation room more frequently than the others. she's had to heal him significantly more, which no doubt has scarred him a bit mentally. she takes great pleasure in having him as a patient because she's grown familiar with his body and testing the limits.

⠀⠀⠀+ THE GREAT WAR⠀ ⠀⠀ occurred 14 years prior to the current timeline of bsd. it was an intense war that took place in europe, considered the ⠀"stronghold of powerful ability users", ⠀including groups such as the ⠀transcendents ⠀and ⠀order of the clock tower.⠀ the war expanded influence through other countries outside of europe [ bsd wiki ].
